Description
An account of the resource
The Civil War re-enactment was held on July 10, 11, and 12, 2009 at the Mount Fay Fish and Game Club in Lewis, NY. The re-enactment was hosted by the 118th New York Regiment and 55th Virginia COD and included participants from the 2nd Michigan, 61st Georgia, 55th Virginia Artillery and Vermont Medical Coalition. This collection of photographs were taken on July 11th with demonstrations and presentations taking place throughout the day, including a battle reenacted by the American Legion. The re-enactors made history come alive on the field and in their camps with their focus being to educate and entertain the public.
Approximately 115 men from the Lewis area enlisted in the Army fighting for the Union. More than 30% of them did not come home alive, and the veterans are buried in the three Lewis cemeteries. A majority of the men from Lewis who fought in the Civil War were part of the 118th and 96th Infantry and the 2nd New York Veteran Cavalry. Some were enlisted with the 5th New York Cavalry and 38th New York Infantry. Many of the men who joined the Civil War efforts had never been more than 10 miles from their North Country homes.

Westport Heritage Festival and Antique Boatshow - Westport, New York
Description
An account of the resource
The 10th annual Westport Heritage Festival took place Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009 to celebrate 400 years of boating on Lake Champlain. The festival which benefited the Westport Heritage House, began at 10 a.m. with a fun race from Camp Dudley to Ballard Park and concluded with a fireworks display.
At the Westport Marina, down the hill from Ballard Park was the Antique and Classic Boat Show featuring close to 40 watercraft, including canvas-covered canoes, Adirondack guideboats, wood runabouts, cruisers and launch boats from the 1920s through 1960s. George Maffey of Westport, president of the Lake Champlain Antique Classic Boat Society, piloted his 1939 Chris Craft Deluxe, named Gee Whiz after his kids.
Highlighting the Antique and Classic Boat Show was a parade of boats and the Lois McClure at the marina, and the Philadelphia II at the Yacht Club dock.

Civil War Days - Lewis, New York

Lake Champlain Legacy Celebration - Crown Point, New York
Description
An account of the resource
The Lake Champlain Legacy Celebration took place on September 19, 2009 at the Crown Point State Historic Site and at the Memorial Lighthouse on the adjacent Crown Point Public Campground in Crown Point, NY. This was the only bi-state and international event of the year-long anniversary celebration coordinated between the New York State Quadricentennial Commission and the Vermont Quadricentennial Commission. The celebration at Crown Point honored the 400th anniversary of Samuel de Champlain's exploration and highlighted the rich cultural heritage of American, Canadian, French and Native American history.
While focusing on the great cultural diversity in the region and the historical significance of Crown Point in American history, the festival also emphasized the rich natural beauty of the Lake. Visitors enjoyed featured performances and presentations from Martin Sexton, The United States Merchant Marine Corps Bands, Piers Faccini, Pulitzer Prize Winning Author and Historian David Hackett Fischer, Justin Jones,Stephane Wrembel, and Darren Bonaparte. A premier screening of Dead Reckoning (a documentary on Samuel de Champlain's exploration of the region) was also highlighted. Musical performances, history lectures, archaeological tours at Fort Crown Point, the newly designed Crown Point Visitor's Center exhibits, and local food made the celebration day an event to remember for generations.
At days end visitors enjoyed a rededication ceremony of the Crown Point Memorial Lighthouse, constructed for the 1909. Tercentennary celebration of Lake Champlain. The lighthouse features a base relief sculpture by Auguste Rodin donated by the French to honor Samuel de Champlain. The evening ended with a beautiful display of fireworks over Lake Champlain.
